Winter Myths About Trees — Busted!
Winter Myths About Trees — Busted!
Winter in Tallahassee may not bring blizzards or ice storms, but it does bring cooler temperatures, shorter days, and the occasional flurry. (Although in January 2025, we got 1.9 inches of snow!) Unfortunately, there are plenty of myths about how trees behave this time of year. At Exclusive Land and Tree Services we’re here to set the record straight so your landscape stays healthy all season long.
Myth #1: “Trees stop growing in winter.”
Reality: While many trees enter dormancy, they don’t completely shut down. Above-ground growth slows, but roots often continue to expand underground, especially in our mild Southern climate.
Tip: Winter is actually one of the best times for pruning — trees are less stressed, and it’s easier to see their structure without leaves in the way.
Myth #2: “Holiday lights damage trees.”
Reality: Properly installed lights won’t harm your trees. The real risk comes from using staples, nails, or leaving lights wrapped tightly around branches for months.
Tip: Use clips or wraps designed for outdoor use, and remove lights promptly after the holidays to keep bark and branches healthy.
Myth #3: “Pruning in winter hurts trees.”
Reality: The opposite is true! Winter pruning is often recommended because trees are dormant, pests are less active, and cuts heal before spring growth.
Tip: A professional inspection can identify weak or hazardous limbs before seasonal storms roll through.
Myth #4: “Dead-looking trees are always dead.”
Reality: Dormancy can make trees look lifeless, but many are simply resting until spring. The challenge is knowing the difference between dormancy and disease.
Tip: Don't take a chance on cutting down a healthy tree. Our professional arborists can give you an expert assessment.
